AGRAMUNT WALKING TOUR

DISCOVER Agramunt: Agramunt, a short distance from our rural tourism farmhouse, is located in the Urgell region, it is a town with a rich history that dates back to the medieval period and that still keeps alive a great tradition in the manufacture of nougat and stone chocolate. Its strategic location, close to the Canal d'Urgell, was key in the agricultural and industrial development of the town, which today continues to be known for its heritage, its gastronomy and its landscapes. MEDIEVAL HISTORY OF AGRAMUNT During the Middle Ages, Agramunt was one of the important defensive points on the border between the Christian counties and the Muslim lands. This fortified town grew around its castle and the church of Santa Maria, which are still preserved today as witnesses of this past. In addition, Agramunt became an important commercial center thanks to its location at a crossroads, attracting merchants and artisans who contributed to its economic growth. THE URGELL CANAL ON ITS PASSAGE THROUGH AGRAMUNT The Urgell Canal is a hydraulic infrastructure that radically transformed the agricultural economy of Agramunt and the entire Urgell plain. Built in the middle of the 19th century, this canal brought water from the Segre River to the driest lands in the interior of Catalonia, turning them into fertile areas for the cultivation of fruit trees, cereals and other crops. The canal, in its passage through Agramunt, is a key element in the agricultural expansion of the town and remains an essential part of its identity. ARTISAN TRADITION: "Nougat and Chocolate on the Stone" Agramunt is world-renowned for its nougats and its stone chocolate, two traditions that have lasted for generations. Agramunt nougats, made with honey, hazelnuts or almonds, are one of the town's star products and are made following traditional recipes. As for the stone chocolate, its grainy texture and intense flavor have made it a delight for those with a sweet tooth. The manufacture of nougat and chocolate is part of Agramunt's gastronomic heritage, with companies such as Torrons Vicens and Xocolates Jolonch, which have kept this tradition alive for centuries.
