CERVERA WALKING TOUR
DISCOVER CERVERA Cervera, located a few kilometers from our rural house, is a city full of history and culture that has played a key role in several decisive moments for Catalonia. During the Middle Ages, Cervera became a city of great strategic and cultural importance, with a rich heritage that is still preserved today. Its influence grew until it became the cradle of key events such as the birth of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the capitulations of the Catholic Monarchs. THE UNIVERSITY OF CERVERA "Emblem of Education in Catalonia" One of the most outstanding monuments is the University of Cervera, founded in 1717. This institution was created by order of King Felipe V after the War of Succession, when all Catalan universities were centralized in a single seat, in Cervera , as a reward for the city's loyalty to the Bourbon crown. Its impressive baroque and neoclassical architecture is a testament to its historical importance. Today, the University of Cervera is a cultural symbol and an essential stop on a visit to the city. THE BIRTH OF THE "GENERALITAT" IN CERVERA Cervera is also significant for its link with the Generalitat de Catalunya. It was here, in 1359, when the Deputation of the General, which later became known as the Generalitat, met for the first time. This fact marks the beginning of one of the oldest institutions in Europe, and Cervera is immortalized as a key place for Catalan history. THE CAPITULATIONS OF THE CATHOLIC KINGS In addition, Cervera was the scene of an event of great historical relevance: the Cervera Capitulations. This agreement, signed in 1469, formalized the marriage between Isabel of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon, the future Catholic Kings. This marriage was decisive for the union of the crowns of Castile and Aragon, which would later translate into the formation of Spain.
